iPhone User Interface Design Research

I am a Mac fans before entrancing university. When Jobs published the iPhone and App store, I think maybe I can practice my limited interaction design knowledge in iOS. Fortunately, in 2010, I had a chance join Xituo a new studio for producing App for iOS. As a interaction designer, I took part in three projects: the Chinese translations of iPhone HIG; Fringerprint doodle and Eyewear Show.

When we want to start our app project, we discovered most of us, designers and programmers , had no idea about HIG. So the director decided to translate the HIG into Chinese, and I manage the details. After we finished this work, I persuaded the director to share the PDF in internet with a no print admission version. It had been downloaded more than 3000 times before Apple uploaded the official Chinese version, and many people wrote to us for thanks. We are pride of this work.

 

Fringerprint doodle is a game in iOS for children. We simulated the human's fringerprint when the people press their finger on the screen. As soon as children finished drawing, app will guide children to blow and shake,the cartoon character will move and play a joy before disappearing. In this project I designed and made up the interactive scenes and some GUI.

Eyewear Show is about how to help people to find the glasses fitting their own face. I pushed this idea , and found the feasibility in technology. By using camera to take photo, and locating the coordinate of pupils, we can change variety of eyewears from database in app, and support more information,such as detail reference of eyewear, Brand, where to buy,etc. I finished the first design prototype, but because of office political, I and other designers left the firm and this app still in freezing. It's very shame pity.

在访问Apple官方网站时,我们能看到很多效果很唯美、很简洁的产品照片,这些照片能将设备最美的地方呈献给大家,让产品看上去非常吸引人。事实上这些照片的拍摄过程非常复杂。The Verge网站最近采访摄影师了Peter Belanger,他已经与苹果合作了很多年。Belganer透露了一些拍摄Apple产品照片的细节部分。

Blanger提到,拍摄产品照片时,Apple公司对细节的追求非常极端。Apple会向他提供草图构想和大概需要的照片类型。随后,Blanger与公司的创意总监合作,将这些草图转变为实际的照片。拍摄的过程也充满了对细节的追求,首先需要将产品摆放好位置,然后加入适合的光线。由于Apple产品的做工和材料都很出色,所以光线照射在产品上时能将材质完美的体现出来。就像照片中的那样,Belanger采用复杂的灯光和设备来准确地将拍摄产品的设计体现出来。

Blanger提到:“我自己首先会选择一个开始的区域,然后思考材质怎样才能最好的展示出来。我需要控制每个表面,这样才能将产品的整体最美的呈现出来。这就像使用Photoshop一样,不是所有的设计都在一个图层,我将灯光作为我的图层,这样可以单独的调整,以满足我的需求。”

Belanger称大部分的工作是通过相机完成的,不过后期制作也很重要。大部分照片是采用佳能5D Mark III拍摄,使用的是24-70mm的镜头

The Prototyping by LEGO MINDSTORMS

I made some LEGO MINDSTORMS cases, but until now the Ashcan is the best. Not for the idea, but for the cube it had been personated. When you go to the front of the Ashcan, its body will forward to you,and open the cap. It's joy, especially the guy meet the Ashcan first time.

GUI design for large equipment

This project finished in 2012. I designed the GUI for a printing equipment factory, when they change the control panel from single color to color touch screen panel. this case  assisted with EE engineer during two months, we redesign the workflow and GUI.

LED, sensor and Arduino

I have a long story with "Light". When I was a student in university, I always been touching by those graceful and technological products about "Light". In addition to praise those good design by others, I prefer to design something about "Light",  there are two projects in my school days.

LITEON is an ambient intelligence street lamp looking as a illuminant. People can transfer the graphics and texts which doodling in their smart phone to the LITEON by WIFI or 3G signals. As soon as LITEON get these info, it will display these in dynamic. I believe that is a well way to share feeling, and will be a interested social media which give more kindly humanistic concern in the city street at night.

"Couple Together" my diploma design, that is a projector designed for young people. I did not only focus on the new technology trends, but also want to achieve the combination of the product and ambience. And this projector be designed as a furniture like a mobile tea table. I am very like this concept, and according the front edge of technology, I redesigned it in my graduate studies.

But after all above, these design only stay in drawing, or just only a form model. When I touched the interaction design, physical computing, Arduino etc new area in my graduate studies, I really realized that industrial designer should take part in the process between the product and people, especially the things with chip embed.

"LED CUBE" is my first project based on Arduino. I made up 8*8*8 Led cube by myself, and tried to achieve light water function with Max8517 chip and Arduino board. It is a truly difficult process for who have limited idea of circuit and programming. But it amazing that let me took more and more interesting in the interactive hardware and decided to take these thing as my research area.

After my Master's degree study, I went to an university in Hangzhou, as a industrial design teacher. Although, I had to deal with very heavy teaching tasks, sometimes had to finish 40 class hours per week in first few years. But I still will to discover and challenge the new world. The "TEMP_CUP" is one case of this process.

I discovered that we usually speculate the temperature of water by watching vapor. Can we color the water as different temperature? I made up this Led cup, that when you move or knock the cup, the led embed in button will light different colors. It's very happy to me, that this prototype had been taken part in the Beijing Maker Festival 2013 as one works of Hangzhou maker space, named Onion capsule.
